Organizesand administers the Engineering Department, ensuring that effective workcontrol and productivity are maintained, whilst using every means to increaseproductivity and reduce costs. Periodically assists in the reviewing of themanning figures, keeping a balance between under- and over-staffing so that allemployees are fully occupied during their hours on duty, whilst balancing theneed for overtime and the use of outside contractors accordingly.

Ensuresthat a full preventative maintenance schedule exists for every item ofmechanical and electrical plant or equipment, including that of otherdepartments such as laundry, kitchen, swimming etc. As well as major plant suchas lifts, chillers, boilers, cooling towers, air handling units and fans,pumps, automatic control systems, etc. Incorporates these schedules into thedevelopment of a comprehensive preventative maintenance scheme; directs andsupervises the work of his employees and outside contractors in its continuousimplementation.

TheChief Engineer is responsible for negotiating terms and conditions for allmanufacturers/agents and service contracts with the assistance of the Cost Controller.The Chief Engineer is responsible for budgeting and financial planning for theEngineering Department. Must be aware of the hotels financial targets and havea commercial awareness of the financial plan. The Engineer is directlyresponsible to Director of Operations and General Manager of the hotel, foroperation of the department according to the departmental financial plan and implementssavings wherever possible without detriment to safety or guest satisfaction.

Co-ordinatesand supervises the work of service contractors to ensure that the terms of allsuch contracts for major plant and systems are fully implemented. Ensures thatall outside contractors and in-house employee’s carry out their work, inaccordance with and adherence to company, local and regional health and safetyat work criteria.

Prepareslists of spare parts and materials required for the continued correctfunctioning of all items of plant and equipment, ensuring that an adequatestock is maintained. Organizes and supervises Engineering Storeroom, inimplementing and efficient stores/inventory control.

Assistsin assessing the long-term requirements of the hotel, includingoverhaul/rehabilitation programs or renewal/replacement works, etc. Workingwith Director of Operations, Regional Director of Engineering and TechnicalServices in advising the General Manager accordingly, as well as to assists indrawing up a comprehensive 5 year capital plan. Is responsible for keepingup-to-date awareness of the latest technology and advising management on thepotential impact on the hotel.

Studiesand arranges for the implementation of all Health and Safety, Energy Controland Management directives.

Keepsup-to-date records of all test certificates/licenses such as, but not limitedto, electrical tests, pressure vessels, fire systems and panels, etc. Assiststhe Human Resources Manager in planning all employee-training needs for Fire /Health / Safety and Security issues where applicable.

Holdsregular meetings for Energy Conservation, Environmental issues, Fire Training(if applicable), Employee Communications and Health and Safety. Also havefrequent meetings with other Department Heads to review the current performanceof their equipment and in the case of the Purchasing Manager, to review thecurrent status of all Purchase Requests and Orders to ensure that all items arebeing progressed as necessary.

With the assistance of the Assistant HumanResources Manager/ Director of Human Resources, selects the Engineers foremployment within the department. Recommends and organizes where necessary, thetraining and development of any member of the Department with potential foradvancement, either in-house or with another hotel, or outside agency.

Locallyadministers all capital projects with assistance from Director of Operations.Completes and submits reports as directed by Director of Operations and GeneralManager. The Chief Engineer must be familiar with all policies affecting thehotel, in particular the   policy, for special projects.
